Roatan, a little slice of heaven

As far as island paradise goes, Roatan is pretty much it.  It’s a small island off the coast of Honduras that hasn’t yet been discovered by many.  You can enjoy this beautiful place without being surrounded by hordes of tourists.  While the entire island beckons you, the West Bay beach is where this natural wonder truly shines.

Roatan is also a popular cruise destination. We were one of the many ships that make port on this beautiful island. Direct flights and vacation packages are available if you want to stay on the island for a longer time.

You had me at Roatan

Roatan will always remind me of heaven on earth.  Pristine white beaches, surrounded by clear, turquoise water, offer an escape from everyday life.  Like in the Corona commercial, all you want to do is relax with a cold beer while watching people and nature before you.

The water is not only pristine but engulfs your body like a warm blanket on a cold day. It almost feels like you’re stepping into a bath that is just starting to cool off, but it’s still warm enough to enjoy. As I write this, I can almost feel the warm breeze and sunshine of that moment.

Dreaming of Roatan

Alex and I have checked out Roatan as a possible beach destination for quite some time. During the winter, especially when the weather in Canada becomes crazy cold, we, like many other Canadians, escape the winter to a sunny destination. It was one of those cold winters that we found the island of Roatan, however, it wasn’t till we went on a cruise that we managed to find ourselves there.

The cruise was scheduled to make stops and various spots in the Caribbean, but our itinerary was changed due to weather. Lucky for us, Roatan was on the new list of stops. We were finally going to see the place we so longed to visit.

Arriving in paradise

Roatan is known for superior snorkelling and scuba diving, and it’s often called a diver’s paradise.  I don’t dive, so I can’t speak directly on that experience, however, based on what a friend said, it lives up to its reputation.  The island is located near the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, the largest barrier reef in the Caribbean Sea. It also happens to be the second-largest worldwide after Australia’s Great Barrier Reef. This is probably why Roatan has become such a popular destination for cruise ships, scuba diving and eco-tourism.

Here you’ll also find wonderful people, beautiful arts and crafts, and exotic wildlife. Whether it’s in the water or on land, there is something to do for everyone. From zip-lining to a visit to an Iguana farm, there are many opportunities to interact with nature and learn about local fauna and flora. I really urge you to visit this small island and experience it for yourself.

All about the beach life

We opted to enjoy Roatan’s beaches. After all, that is why we were there. To see and experience that gorgeous water. I don’t think I’ve had a more enjoyable beach escape until this moment. After all, what’s a beach without some time to enjoy it.

I don’t think I’ve ever wanted to stay in the water as much as I did then. Really, the only reason we had to leave was to make sure we didn’t miss our ship.

I would return to Roatan in a heartbeat. There is so much to explore on the island and around it. As the winters get really cold, the reason to go to a beach destination always becomes an option.

Next time, we will definitely stay longer and explore the island in more detail. The possibility puts a smile on my face.
