Travel destinations to obsess about

Each year I discover a number of new places that I want to visit. In addition to my existing bucket list, these places become an obsession that comes out of nowhere. So, I decided to round-up a list of the three new travel destinations I want to visit. These include Morocco, salt flats in Bolivia and Budapest.

Hello new travel destinations

Realistically speaking, I think the list of places that I don’t want to go to is probably shorter than those I do want to visit. With the all the travel photos and videos on Instagram, YouTube and online in general, it’s never been easier to find travel inspiration.

I’ve talked before about getting a little jealous of people who travel to exciting destinations I want to see. However, that can also become an advantage. These posts expose me to new and interesting places I wouldn’t be aware of otherwise. And let me say that there are so many of them! Let’s take a look.

Morocco

There is something about Morocco lately. It seems to be everywhere I look. I have heard many people say that it’s a place that is worth a visit for years now. It’s only been lately that I seem to see images of it all over the place. My Instagram feed is filled with different shots of people who are there or have just come back. I see posts, blogs and ads for going to Morocco and the more I see, the more I want to go.

There is something fascinating about this place. Casablanca, Fez and Marrakesh all sound so exotic. The sounds of the markets, the food and the colours. It all seems like it’s made for admiration and the need to capture with a camera. As someone who loves to buy souvenirs when I travel, I think I would have a hard time coming back empty-handed.

And then, there is the desert. There is something oddly appealing about it. Being out there, in the middle of the vast sandy wilderness, is a perfect setting for imagining I’m on a set of Lawrence of Arabia. Like, come on. I want this.

Salt flats

Let’s be honest, I’m not one that need a lot of inspiration to travel. If anything, I am one that can come up with plenty of reasons to travel. But sometimes, there are places that are not on my list, and the more I see of them, the more they intrigue me. The Salar de Uyuni salt flats in Bolivia fill that spot nicely.

I’ve been aware of salt flats and how interesting they are, but wasn’t really in a burning need to go see them.  However, I’ve started to see so many people going to Bolivia lately to see them and I want to go too. The images are almost unreal. The vast emptiness is beyond imaginable and something about it calls to me. Plus, you are walking on what looks like a giant mirror! Talk about getting out of the ordinary.

The more I learn about this attraction, the more I want to go. See the video below and tell you don’t want to go there.

Budapest

Budapest, the capital of Hungary, is again one of those travel destinations that has captured my imagination. It seems that everyone and their brother is heading over, is there now or just came back. I mean, talk about FOMO. Realistically, the city won’t change overnight, but right now there is a huge need to go and see it. Like ASAP.

I love history, especially the European chapter of it, and Budapest seems like the perfect destination for a nerd like me. I also love architecture and it seems that the buildings there were made with photographers in mind. The many images of the parliament building in Budapest alone have convinced me to go. Honestly, I don’t think there is a bad angle anywhere.

The picturesque bridge, the Roman baths and the promise of culinary delights are just the icing on the cake that is Budapest.

Getting there

Picking travel destinations can be easy and it’s the best part of planning a trip. For me, I am now in a stage where I am exploring best ways to get there, tours and solo options as well as prices.  The down side is that just because you want to go somewhere, it doesn’t mean there are deals for those destinations.

I’ve never done a trip with a tour company before, but I’m curiously checking them out. There are so many to choose from and so many price points! Luckily for me, I love the research part almost as much as the travel part (almost is key here). If you have done any group tours, I want your advice. What did you like, what did you hate? Any recommendations?

Destinations are all great, but I need to decide which one I want to go to first, when and whether it will be with Alex or by myself. So many decisions!

Are there any special destinations you’re obsessed with at the moment? Let me know!

  • I want Bolivia salt des(s)ert now Lol

Of all three destinations, I can vouch for Budapest. It is an amazing city which is just SO much fun. Hope you go soon X

    • Nice! What did you think of the salt flats? Worth the trip? 🤔 So glad to hear you liked Budapest 💜

  • You will love eastern Europe especially Budapest. Traveled to Budapest, Bratislava, and Prague Fall of 2017 & can”t wait to get back. An opportunity to hear you speak would have enhanced my visit. Any thoughts of Slovenia in June/July this year? NFR: If someone invites me and pays my way, I”m certainly open to it. But my June is filled with family travel (and Walker Percy Weekend). – RD

    • I would love to see Bratislava as well. I’m hoping to check it out and Budapest later this year but nothing concrete yet. 🙂 I didn’t like Prague that much. I wanted to but it just didn’t happen.

  • All of your obsessions are great and it’s so good to have dreams. Hope you get to go! My current obsession is Warsaw and Kiev and Odessa – probably a train trip linking them all. And India. India is always there – lurking!

    • Thank you! They seem to have gotten under my skin! 🤗 I was born in Warsaw but it’s been 17 years since I last visited. Hope you make it there 😁 India is a place I also want to visit one day.

    • Thank you! So happy to hear you liked them both. 🤗 Did you go on your own to Morocco or did you do a tour?

      • I went with my Mum for a few days. It’s very easy to travel without a tour, but if you’re interested in the history more perhaps it would be best to go on one. Make sure you go to a hamman though when you get over there!

    • Awesome! What was your fave thing about Budapest? I can’t wait to go! 😍 Are you going to Morocco anytime soon?
